Mazzy Joya, our whimsical Wildflower Girl, created a case combining childhood nostalgia and magical realism. A majestic unicorn with pink and purple hues covers the case with a glistening castle in the corner. The case feels like Mazzy’s energy – joyous and positive.
Fairytales and magical creatures have been a part of Mazzy’s life since she was a kid. From having a photo of a fairy goddess taped onto her bedframe above her pillow to telling her friends about a secret world she would enter as she slept.
“I had to answer all these riddles to enter this world, but when I did, I would turn into this fairy warrior girl and have this whole double life,” Mazzy said. She was truly convinced her friend believed she could travel through different realms as she slept. “Looking back, she probably thought I was either a liar or just discovered what dreaming was.”
Wolves, horses, and cats also played a big role in Mazzy’s younger days. She found them to be just as mystical as unicorns are perceived to be. Books like Warriors by Erin Hunter were some of her favorite stories growing up. Any stories involving magic animals or humans turning into animals were her favorite types of stories, and still are today.

Playing dress up
Mazzy’s style is very alive, she finds inspiration in colors she likes and goes from there. As she grows, her clothing will change alongside her as she is constantly evolving.
“Everything has a story. I have trouble describing myself in any sort of way. I dress for myself and to feel deeper in my skin. I would like to say style is as simple as that,” Mazzy said. To Mazzy, fashion is not just the clothes you wear but it’s what it makes you feel. Fashion is about experimenting and finding what you enjoy wearing. If Mazzy feels like the textures are off in her outfit she’ll do a costume change and put something new on that makes her feel good.
For her case, Mazzy would pair it with “something metal and a looming smoke cloud that follows behind you.”

Growing up an artist and finding modeling
Mazzy feels as though she stumbled into her current career path by chance. She didn’t have a plan to end up in a certain spot, she just started and knew she was moving. When she was younger, Mazzy was so against anything that had to do with vanity so modeling wasn’t something she was actively pursuing. However, now that she is in the modeling industry, she doesn’t feel like her life has too much to do with vanity.
“Nothing has changed for me. I still get to eat what I want, say what I want, and dress how I want. Maybe that’s just because I am still not too worried about how I look, I am just interested in having fun,” Mazzy said.
Mazzy was raised to be brave, strong, and smart by her mother, a single mother who took on both roles. Her mother taught her to work hard and be strong, something Mazzy greatly appreciates. Her upbringing instilled a sense of self-reliance that now defines her modeling work. If she were to leave a lasting mark on the industry, Mazzy hopes it would be through the gift of laughter.
“I work hard and admire hard workers, but nothing drives me crazier than when people take modeling as serious as open heart surgery. Nothing is that serious. Work hard, but lighten up,” Mazzy said.
Art remains a defining pillar of Mazzy’s identity; she has viewed herself as an artist for as long as she can remember. While she modestly notes that her skill fluctuates from day to day, art isn't just a skill for her—it is the essence of who she is.
“Love is art and love is my life. I’ve been judged a lot for the way I love (very intensely/ without rhyme or reason) but I don’t care. It's just the way I want to live my life. I’m in no rush to prove myself,” Mazzy said. Mazzy believes that being passionate about something matters more than being “good” at it, there’s no need to prove yourself when it’s what you love to do.
“My mom and I have talked a lot about using the story of our cat Penelope. She is literally a phoenix who rose from the ashes. This is a real thing that we're making, so I don’t want to spoil it, but it's about her journey home after spending 23 days lost in a burnt down town,” Mazzy said. Writing a children’s book is on Mazzy’s list, and we cannot wait to read it.

Wildflower Girl
Mazzy first entered the Wildflower world as a Wildflower Girl for our Ashley Williams Blue I Heart Me case. The video (which you can watch on our Youtube here!) introduced us to our latest collaborator. Before being asked to design her own case, Mazzy and her close friend Lotus Blossom (our latest Wildflower girl whose video you can watch here!) would talk about what cases they would design.
Every LA girl's dream and “I made it” moment is having their own WF case, a joke Mazzy made for years. She was beyond overwhelmed and excited when Devon and Sydney reached out to have her create her own case.
“Devon and Sydney could not have been more supportive during the process. They gave me an infinite amount of creative freedom and love,” Mazzy said. During the campaign, the WF team gave Mazzy full influence. She had the chance to pick everyone involved from hair to photographer, she was able to have all her favorite people involved. “Being able to choose everything and having such clear communication was a dream. I’m over the moon,” Mazzy said.
Mazzy first spotted Wildflower Cases in Urban Outfitters. She wanted one so bad, but she didn’t even have a phone at the time. She finds WF specials because it’s a real life brand created by real people – homemade LA babies, she said.
“Anything that I can be involved in that includes creating, other girls, and playing dress up is a dream come true, so of course this was nothing short of a DREAM!” Mazzy said.
Having fun is all Mazzy wants people to remember when they start to take things too seriously.
“I hope I inspire people to care for others and for themselves. I hope my platform can show people that doing whatever you want can benefit you, as long as it's not hurting others,” Mazzy said. Mazzy says she’s not a naturally perfectly happy person; rather it’s a mindset she learned to have over time. Reaching this state of happiness required a long journey of learning. Now, she has an uplifting energy that is so contagious you can’t help but feel happy when she’s around.
She’s as magical as the unicorn on her case. Mazzy is leaving an impact on the internet, reminding us that we’re all human and it’s important to enjoy the life we have.
